What is a Child Life Specialist?

A Child Life Specialist is a professional that is mostly known to work in a hospital, but they can also work in hospice care, private doctor's offices, a dentist office, or a school. Their job and goal is to help children and families through challenging situations such as a hospital stay, tests, procedures, diagnoses, and to develop coping strategies to deal with all of those things.

As of today in order to become a child life specialist one must earn a bachelor's or master's degree in a field related to child development, then complete a 480-hour internship, and pass a national examination. In the year 2022 the requirements to become a certified child life specialist will be changing. In 2022 one must complete a master's degree program in an accredited Child Life Program before starting their internship.
